Rumor: driving across the GTA 6 map could take around 30 minutes

Driving from one end of the GTA 6 map to the other could take roughly half an hour, according to an estimate reported by Spanish tech outlet Xataka. That would be about twice as long as crossing Los Santos and Blaine County in GTA 5. Keep in mind this is an estimate, not an official figure from Rockstar Games.

What's actually being claimed

The number doing the rounds today is simple and eye-catching: a car trip across the whole GTA VI map would take around 30 minutes. Xataka frames it carefully, as something the available information "points to", and uses GTA 5 as a yardstick: the drive would take twice as long.

It's worth reading that correctly. Taking twice as long to cross doesn't automatically mean the map is exactly twice the size in area. Travel time depends on a lot of factors: the car you're driving, how the roads are laid out, whether there are long highways or slow city streets, and the route you pick. Still, it's a useful real-world sense of scale for what it will feel like with a controller in your hands.

Is it legit?

  • Who's saying it: Xataka, an established general tech outlet, reporting the estimate. It is not an announcement from Rockstar.
  • What lines up: Rockstar's trailers have made it clear the game is set in the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City as its main city and several distinct regions around it. A map larger than GTA 5's fits with everything shown so far.
  • What we don't know: how the figure was worked out, which vehicle was used and which route was taken. Without those details, 30 minutes is a ballpark number.
  • What would confirm it: official map size data from Rockstar or, more likely, players timing the drive themselves on launch day.

What it means if you're waiting for the game

If the estimate is close, GTA 6 will be a world where a coast-to-coast drive is a journey in its own right. That cuts both ways. The upside: more room to explore, more variety in scenery and a stronger feeling of being in a huge, living place. The worry some fans have: that getting around could drag if fast travel options are limited.

That's why it's worth thinking about your ride now. The community is already debating which personal vehicles they'll be hunting for, and on a map this big that choice matters more than ever: a sports car built for highways is a very different pick from an off-roader for the wilder parts of the state.

When we'll know for sure

The GTA 6 release date is November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That's less than three weeks away, so the real test is close: as soon as the game is out, players will clock the drive and we'll find out whether 30 minutes is too short or too long. Until then, treat it as a reasonable hint rather than a locked-in fact.
