GTA 6 map size rivals GTA 4, GTA 5 and RDR2 combined

The GTA 6 map is so big it rivals GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined, according to a new report from GamesRadar+. Even more striking: some Rockstar developers are reportedly still stumbling across places in the game they have never seen before.

How big is Leonida?

That is a bold comparison. GTA 4's Liberty City was a dense, compact city. GTA 5's Los Santos and Blaine County pushed the scale much further with countryside, mountains and coastline. Red Dead Redemption 2's frontier is still one of the largest worlds Rockstar has ever built. For Leonida to stack up against all three at once says a lot about the jump GTA 6 is making.

Keep in mind the headline doesn't give an exact figure in square miles, so treat the comparison as a way to describe the scale rather than a precise measurement. Fans have reacted exactly as you'd expect, with plenty of them summing it up the same way: "It's insane."

The idea that developers are still discovering new corners also makes sense for a world built by teams spread across several studios, where each group focuses on its own area and nobody has necessarily explored the whole thing.

Story breaks built for exploring

The report lands on the same day Spanish outlet HobbyConsolas highlighted another related detail: GTA 6 adds "natural pauses" to its story so players don't rush through it and instead take their time exploring Leonida. The two stories fit together neatly. If the map really is this big, Rockstar wants you out there roaming, not just jumping from one mission marker to the next.

In practice, that should mean stretches of the campaign where the game deliberately steps back and lets you wander, much like Red Dead Redemption 2, where a big part of the fun was getting lost between missions.

What it means if you're waiting for GTA 6

The GTA 6 release date is November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so launch is less than three weeks away. If the map is as big as reported, expect:

  • A longer playtime than GTA 5, especially if you like to explore.
  • More secrets and easter eggs tucked away in areas most players won't reach in the first week.
  • A slower-paced story designed to pull you off the main path.

We'll be building a full GTA 6 map guide as soon as the game is out, covering regions, landmarks and everything the community uncovers. Until then, the GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined comparison is the best hint we have of just how much ground Leonida will cover.
