GTA 6 Slows Down: Some Missions Locked Behind Time or Money

Rockstar Games doesn't want you rushing through GTA 6: according to Spanish outlet MARCA, some missions will stay locked until enough time passes or until you have enough money, and HotHardware reports that the studio deliberately slowed the game down because it felt too fast for all the detail packed into it.

What we know

Two separate outlets land on the same idea. MARCA puts it bluntly: Rockstar doesn't want you to run in GTA VI. In practice, that means story missions won't all be available back to back. Some will ask you to wait or to have a certain amount of cash before you can start them.

HotHardware explains the reasoning. The game reportedly felt too fast for its own level of detail, so Rockstar pulled the pace back. In other words, the studio would rather you spend time in Leonida, exploring and soaking in the world, than blast through mission after mission.

There are no public details yet on how many missions use these gates, how long you'll have to wait or how much money is involved. Don't assume anything beyond that until the game is out.

Why it matters

If you've played earlier Rockstar games, this isn't completely new: some missions there only opened at certain times of day or after other tasks were done. The difference is that Rockstar now seems to be using it as a deliberate design choice to control the pacing of the whole story.

For anyone counting down to launch, there are two ways to read it:

  • If you love open-world sandboxes, this is good news. You'll have every reason to roam, take on side activities and build up cash between story beats.
  • If you're mainly here for the story, the campaign may feel longer than you expected, since the game will sometimes make you pause before moving on.

Either way, managing your money early looks like it will matter more than in previous entries. Once the game drops, we'll put together guides on making money fast and on which missions to tackle first.

Release date still on track

Meanwhile, the launch isn't moving. The Daily Scrum News reports that Rockstar says the game is ready, that 12 new screenshots have been released and that the November 19, 2026 release date holds. GTA 6 arrives that day on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; there's still no release date for the PC version.

Less than three weeks to go. If Rockstar shows more about how these gated missions work before launch, we'll cover it here as soon as it lands.
