According to a report picked up by The News International, GTA 6 will change how sprinting works and end the button mashing that, per the outlet, has been part of the series for 25 years. This is not confirmed: neither Rockstar Games nor Take-Two has commented.

What's being claimed

The core of the story is simple: GTA 6's sprint "reportedly" moves away from repeatedly tapping a button to run faster. What the available report doesn't explain is how the new system would work. We don't know if you'd simply hold a button, toggle a run mode or deal with a different stamina system. We're not going to fill that gap with guesses: for now, the only claim is that button mashing is gone.

Why it matters

It might sound like a small detail, but anyone who has played the series for years knows how often you run on foot in a single session. Crossing the map, escaping the cops or reaching a mission marker in time has often meant hammering the controller. Many players find it annoying, and in long sessions it wears out both your thumb and your gamepad. It's also an accessibility issue: not everyone can, or wants to, tap a button dozens of times in a row.

If the change is real, it would be one of those quality-of-life upgrades that never make it into a trailer but that you notice from the very first minute of gameplay.

Is it legit?

  • Who's saying it: The News International, a general news outlet, not a known leaker or a site that specializes in Rockstar. The headline itself says "reportedly", which means it's passing on a claim rather than confirming it independently.
  • Track record: we're not aware of any history of GTA scoops from this outlet, so caution is warranted.
  • What fits: it's a sensible change for a current-gen game and matches how modern open-world titles keep simplifying basic controls.
  • What's missing: a statement from Rockstar, gameplay footage showing the sprint in action or, at the latest, the launch itself.

When we'll know for sure

GTA 6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, which is less than three weeks away. If Rockstar doesn't clear it up before then, we'll find out with a controller in hand on release day. Until then, treat this for what it is: an unconfirmed rumor.

We'll keep watching and update this story as soon as there's anything official.
